Campaigns to Remember

In my marketing classes and in my own day-to-day life, I’ve come across a few ingenious campaigns. 3 I’d like to share…

1. Microsoft Kin – As a piece of their campaign they gave Rosa a KIN (new Windows-based phone) and sent her off to meet every single person she’s “friends” with on her social networking sites. The campaign feels very young and fresh and really puts a lot of weight on social networking, which is a great way to sell a phone (the feel of the advertising reminds me of the HTC campaign).

2. Visa’s Go World - Although this campaign has passed, these commercials are still inspiring and emotional. The stories told are true, heart-wrenching, and unbelievable. A couple made me tear up a little bit…

3. Levi’s Go Forth – These pieces are interesting and subtle. They truly capture an audience and exude a completely unique feel. The words are great, the cinematography is great, and the stills are even better! The pictures by Ryan McGinley (love love love) truly capture the feeling of heritage in this campaign.

Semester 1: Check

First semester completed at Emerson!

I had an amazing experience. Did great in all my classes and loved my teachers. Found that my fellow students are incredibly smart and focused. This can become almost a problem when it comes to group work–in a school so full of leaders (in the Marketing major especially), it’s tough for anyone to back down. Speaking of group work, I did A LOT of it. In my 4 classes (two major related, 2 gen-eds), I had 3 big group projects–all of which were marketing related.

Definitely learned a lot, and am learning to see things in a new way. It’s an exciting time in my life to say the least–almost halfway done my college career. Enjoying it will I can.

Focused. Confident. Successful. Excited. Career-Driven. Saavy. Inspiring. Unique. Professional. Collaborative.

All words to describe the Emerson College students I’ve experienced so far. What a refreshing group of students–it has inspired me to work harder at my studies than ever before.

Classes are, for the most part, intellectually stimulating as well. Principles of Marketing, an 8:30 a.m. class, is my favorite–and that’s saying something, considering I am not a morning person!

I’m loving it here, and am very glad that I made the decision to attend. Definitely the right school for me!

End of Summer Update

Hello there!

Well, the summer is almost over. I head off to school in exactly 19 days. This year I’ll be attending Emerson College in Boston, MA as a sophomore transfer student. It was a tough decision to transfer, but I’m confident it was the right one! I will, of course, miss the amazing communications students and teachers at Elon. They taught me more than I ever imagined I would learn in my freshman year. The best of luck to everyone–I know I’ll be seeing you all out there in the real world someday!

Sadly, my internship has also come to an end. The experience I had there was enlightening and inspiring. The media department taught me how to use social media effectively, how to deal with all kinds of clients, how to do good research, and what working in a small firm enviroment is like. All in all, I loved it!

I’m beyond excited for what the fall and future will hold. Keep checking in for more updates!

And the interning begins!

Hello out there! And welcome back!

After a short hiatus, I am back to report on my continuing experiences and education. This time as an intern for Pannos Winzeler Marketing in Bedford, NH! Pannos Winzeler is a small marketing firm (+/- 20 employees) that focuses mainly on financial institutions (banks and credit unions!). As the media department’s intern, I’ve been doing a lot of general marketing work (drafting press releases and articles) as well as specific “media” tasks. I’ve done a lot of research about social networking for our clients–which admittedly at first seems weird–which as turned out to be very interesting. It’s cool to see how Facebook and Twitter can apply to banks and how creatively they’re being used.

It’s only been 5 days on the job, but I’m really enjoying my work. I’m beginning to think I finally chose the right major!

Final Video Project!

So as the year comes to a close, so does my beloved Digital Media Convergence class! And so… here is my final project! Not what I originally planned on (and with many bumps along the road), but I like how it turned out nonetheless. I Live Here

Lately, I’ve been working hard as the Account Executive for the publicity and distribution team for “I Live Here”. I Live Here is a collaboration between the Elon School of Communications and the Department of Performing Arts. The piece is Act III of VIBE, the final main stage production of the year for the Department of Performing Arts.

I Live Here is an extensive project combining the skills of Bill Webb, set & lighting designer; Jack Smith, costume designer; Lauren Kearns, choreographer; J. McMerty, video artist; and our entire class.

Kearns describes I Live Here has a “a hybrid form of performance that utilizes athletic modern dance, text, voice, live music, set design, visual images and video to engage the audience in a multi-sensory dialogue about the meaning of home and place.”

With under two weeks until opening night, my team has been working to spread the word about I Live Here. It has been very interesting to see how it all comes together! Check out our blog to read some interviews with the dancers and read more about the project. I’ll post another update soon, but keep your eyes out for an article in the Pendulum next week!

Portraits

Our last picture assignment was portraits. I was lucky, because my roommate’s little sister visited this past week. I took the opportunity to photograph them. These are staged, yes, but less “lay in the grass and cross your arms” or “stand up against this wall and look dreamy” and more people doing what they’re doing, acting how they act normally. I like this approach better–it’s less stifling. They’re still looking at the camera, of course, but these pictures represent these people as they are. Also included are portraits of my family members, also in the same kind of “non-posed” fashion. Anyways… enjoy!
